Congratulations to the NRG Oncology NCORP Members Assigned to NCI Steering Committees

The following NRG Oncology National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) members have recently been appointed to NCI Steering Committees.

David T. Marshall, MD, MS

Dr. Marshall was recently appointed to serve as the Community Oncologist on the NCI Genitourinary Cancer Steering Committee (GUSC). As a part of the NCI GUSC, he will participate on monthly meetings to address the design, prioritization, and evaluation of concepts for phase 2 and 3 clinical trials within the genitourinary disease site.

Dr. Marshall is the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina and the Medical Director of the Clinical Trials Office at the Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston, South Carolina. His primary research focus includes genitourinary and gastrointestinal cancers and treatment options such as image-guided radiotherapy, radiosurgery, tomotherapy, and prostate brachytherapy. Additional academic focuses include the effects of vitamin D on prostate cancer, implementation of new technology into radiotherapy, and racial disparities in oncology.

“I am excited to contribute to the efforts of the NCI GU Steering Committee. I look forward to learning a great deal and doing what I can to promote clinical trials that will accrue and therefore be applicable to patients from underserved and understudied populations,” remarked Dr. Marshall.

Jennifer Wenzel, PhD, MS, RN, CCM, FAAN

Dr. Wenzel, the Co-chair of the NRG Oncology Health Disparities Committee, was recently appointed to serve as the Health Disparities Special Expert on the NCI Symptom Management and Health-Related Quality of Life Steering Committee (SxQoL SC). Through her role on the Steering Committee, she will be responsible for addressing the design, prioritization, and evaluation of concepts for clinical trials to control cancer symptoms and cancer treatment side-effects.

In addition to her role at NRG Oncology, Dr. Wenzel is an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Nursing and Medicine (Oncology) and at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in Cancer Prevention and Control. Dr. Wenzel directs the PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs at the JHU School of Nursing. Dr. Wenzel also co-leads the John Hopkins Merck Cancer Alliance program’s Evaluation and Dissemination Core. She has substantially contributed to nurse-community health worker navigation interventions and has a strong commitment to inclusion in the research community and improving cancer outcomes for all patients.

Dr. Wenzel currently serves on the NCORP Disparities Integration Emphasis Group for the NCI with the goal of ensuring that research protocol design and implementation lead to clinical trial outcomes that will benefit previously underserved patients, families, and communities.

“It is both an honor and a tremendous responsibility to work with other experts to promote cancer equity and strategically address disease and treatment burden disparities as a member of the NCI Symptom Management and Health-Related Quality of Life Steering Committee,” stated Dr. Wenzel.

William A. ”Alex” Wilson, MD, DABR

Dr. Wilson was recently appointed to serve as the Community Oncologist on the NCI Cancer Care Delivery Research Steering Committee (CCDR SC). In his tenure with the NCI CCDR Steering Committee, he will participate in the prioritization of CCDR concepts that will be conducted through the NCORP Research Base mechanism, such as descriptive observational studies, analytic observational studies, and intervention studies.

Dr. Wilson is Medical Director of the Adena Cancer Center in Chillicothe, Ohio. He is a radiation oncologist and serves as the CCDR Principal Investigator for the Columbus NCORP. Dr. Wilson’s research and clinical interests include the following: general radiation oncology, health disparities in cancer care, social determinants of health in cancer care, and process and structure of cancer care delivery. Dr. Wilson serves on the NCORP Disparities Integration Emphasis Group for the NCI and further is serving as a steering committee member for a health-related social needs clinical trial planning group Dr. Wilson is passionate about quality cancer care and clinical trial participation in the community oncology setting.

Dr. Wilson completed his radiation oncology training and medical education at the University of Kentucky.
