The Scientific Core Committees support the Cancer Disease Site Committees, assist in protocol development, provide special expertise relevant broadly to NRG Oncology’s scientific agenda irrespective of tumor type, and provide guidance for quality control of clinical trials and translational science projects. The Medical Physics Subcommittee supports NCTN clinical trials by advancing the integration, evaluation, and standardization of radiation therapy technologies. The Subcommittee brings together physicists with expertise in patient simulation, treatment planning, beam delivery, and quality assurance to collaborate with clinicians and protocol teams.
NRG Oncology is seeking a Chair to lead the multidisciplinary Medical Physics Subcommittee, in collaboration with the Center for Innovation in Radiation Oncology (CIRO), in its mission to ensure the safe, effective, and timely implementation of emerging technologies across NCTN trials. The Chair will ensure that radiotherapy components of NRG Oncology trials are scientifically rigorous, feasible, and compliant with CIRO disease-site templates, IROC requirements, and AAPM TG-263 standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the Medical Physics Subcommittee in aligning its expertise with the goals of NCTN clinical trials and NRG Oncology activities.
- Review new radiation therapy and imaging concepts, protocols, and amendments for technical accuracy and consistency; liaise with IROC and CIRO for protocol support and analysis needs.
- Appoint and mentor Physics PIs for approved concepts, with a focus on supporting early-career physicists.
- Maintain and develop disease-site–specific radiation therapy templates in collaboration with CIRO content owners.
- Collaborate with CIRO interest groups on emerging radiation therapy technologies.
- Organize semiannual virtual physics meetings and coordinate regular meetings with the physics group.
- Monitor and prioritize subcommittee activities, allocate resources, and delegate responsibilities to meet timelines and goals.
- Promote consistent quality assurance practices and contribute to protocol reviews across trials.
- Ensure active engagement of committee members and foster inclusive participation in protocol development and strategic planning.
- Mentor subcommittee members and support training opportunities for new investigators.
- Represent the subcommittee in cross-disciplinary initiatives, NCTN-wide discussions, and NRG Oncology meetings.
- Liaise with other committee chairs and keep NRG Oncology leadership informed of trends, challenges, and opportunities.
- Report to the Chair, Radiation Oncology Committee.
- Contribute to the development and editing of scientific grants, including the NRG Oncology core grant.
- Report performance metrics at Radiation Oncology Committee meetings and other relevant forums as needed.
- Serve as an advocate for NRG Oncology in all affairs.
- Support the conduct of activities that are compliant with regulations, NRG Policies and Procedures, and practices that ensure potential conflicts are disclosed and managed.
NRG Oncology Committee Chairs must be at an NRG Oncology Member Institution and eligible to receive federal funding. Nominal funds from federal grants to offset related effort and travel to NRG Oncology meetings are provided. Committee/subcommittee Chairs are appointed by the NRG Oncology Group Chairs for a six-year term, renewable once.
