On behalf of the NRG DEI and HD Committees, we commemorate the work, life and the remarkable contributions of our member and colleague, Edith P. Mitchell, MD, MACP, FCCP, FRCP (London). Dr. Mitchell’s many roles: Enterprise Vice President for Cancer Disparities at Jefferson Health’s Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, Director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities, and Associate Director for Diversity Affairs at Jefferson’s Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College, and honorary membership in American Society for Radiation Oncology, exemplify her exceptional contributions to medicine, cancer care, and the clarity of her focus to end cancer disparities while advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Dr. Mitchell's impact extended beyond her military achievements as a retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General and historic representation as a female physician; she was a dedicated advocate for underserved populations in all aspects of her work and profession. She pioneered research focused on factors influencing clinical trial participation, addressing ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other barriers to accrual among minorities. Her numerous honors and awards from scientific, civic, and community organizations are a testament to her tireless dedication and service in lifting up others while on her path to success.
Dr. Mitchell's work on the National Cancer Institute’s Blue Ribbon Panel, advising on Vice-President Joe Biden’s National Cancer Moonshot initiative, and her appointment to the President’s Cancer Panel from 2019-2023 accompanied her active engagement in committees for the NCI, ECOG-ACRIN, ASCO, NRG Oncology, and the American Association for Cancer Research. She was also an honorary member of ASTRO.
For all of us who were privileged to work with her within and outside NRG Oncology, Dr. Mitchell was a source of inspiration, influencing countless lives and careers. Her unwavering commitment is demonstrated by her working generously and tirelessly to the very end. Her trailblazing spirit, and her dedication to championing health equity and diversity are why we honor her contributions to these two important legacies of her remarkable career. She leaves behind very large shoes to fill, but a living presence that inspires us to carry forward in the efforts she championed so well.
