In Memoriam – Victor G. Vogel, MD, MHS, FACP

05/12/2026

We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Dr. Victor Vogel, a dedicated leader in breast oncology, whose career of over forty years was defined by a profound commitment to breast cancer prevention and care.

Throughout his career, Dr. Vogel’s passion for advancing science and improving the lives of those affected by breast cancer shaped the work of many prominent institutions, including the Geisinger Health System, where he spent sixteen years as the Director of the Cancer Service Line and Director of Breast Medical Oncology/Research. His leadership also extended to the American Cancer Society, where he served as National Vice President for Research. Prior to his time with the ACS, Dr. Vogel was a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Co-Director of the Magee-Womens’ Hospital/University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Biochemoprevention Program.

Dr. Vogel’s contributions to the legacy NSABP group were fundamental to its mission. For over a decade, he served on our Board of Directors and the Steering Committee for the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial. He served as the National Protocol Chairman for the National Cancer Institute Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR), an extensive undertaking involving over 19,000 women. Notably, the STAR trial was a significant step in breast cancer prevention, demonstrating that for postmenopausal women at increased risk of breast cancer, raloxifene was just as effective as tamoxifen, without some of the serious side effects.

While reflecting on Dr. Vogel’s impact, Dr. Norman Wolmark, NRG Oncology Group Chair and Chairman of the NSABP Foundation, shared: “Dr. Vogel was a pillar of our research community; his compassion and leadership were instrumental in advancing the NSABP’s mission, and his legacy will continue to inspire our collective efforts.”

Dr. Vogel will be dearly missed, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and his scientific contributions.

Our sincere condolences to Dr. Vogel’s family and friends.
