Social Media Workshop
The NRG Oncology Communications Committee hosted its Social Media Workshop. The session was introduced by Communications Committee Chair, Dr. Thomas Julian, and led by Communications Committee member, Dr. Rebecca Previs. The workshop presenters included Dr. Cliff Robinson, Dr. Deanna Teoh, and Dee Sparacio.
Dr. Robinson, a radiation oncologist at Washington University, and one of #NRG2020's social media ambassadors for the meeting in Houston, focused on Twitter for Oncology and highlighted some of the advantages for physicians to use Twitter – engagement with peers and rapid access to data being two of the many reasons.
Dr. Teoh, a gynecologic oncologist at the University of Minnesota, discussed the benefits of physician engagement through social media. She reviewed the different social media platforms and barriers to social media use, including privacy concerns and permanence of anything that someone posts. Dr. Teoh mentioned that her favorite platform is Instagram and also showed attendees a sample video of how Dr. Don Dizon currently uses Tik Tok.
Dee Sparacio is an ovarian cancer survivor, blogger, research advocate, and #gyncsm Twitter Community co-founder. She is a member of ASCO's Clinical Practice Guideline Committee and Social Media Subcommittee. Ms. Sparacio's presentation reviewed the benefits and supports for survivors in Twitter Cancer Communities.
All of the presenters had the following advice for new users: use professional rules of conduct, and review institutional polices for social media use.
If you are on Twitter, you can follow the presenters at the following Twitter accounts: @TBJulianMD, @BeccaPrevisMD, @SBRT_CR, @DeannaTeoh, and @womenofteal.
Twitter 1-on-1 Special Session
Several #NRG2020 attendees were ready to get started on Twitter! During this special walk-in session, NRG Oncology staff and physicians were on hand to show users one-on-one how simple it is to set up a new account or make their existing account more engaging. Feedback received from attendees indicated that they felt the one-on-one assistance was very helpful and they were ready to post their first tweets!
